The Blurb -

'Sarah is forced to the edge of sanity by the ghosts of her family's past. Suffering from violent and bloody hallucinations, she seeks the help of psychiatrist and friend Michael Brink.

After being sent to an institution in a catatonic state covered in blood - from stabbing her unfaithful boyfriend - Sarah is forced to confront the truth about her father's death and the demon, Jack, who caused her father's suicide and is now the reason for her horrific hallucinations. Unlike her father, Sarah refuses to kill herself. She bargains for her life and succeeds.

In Sarah's struggle to regain her life and her sanity, she discovers more things to the world than she could ever have imagined and leaves her seeking the answer to the nagging question, "Who is really mad?" '

Shadows starts off by setting the scene. A cheating boyfriend and a girl coming to terms with the death of her father sounds like the beginning of something normal and boring but then all of a sudden the story curves into something much more scary. Twists and turns throughout the book make the plot look so complex but yet it is so simple. As the tale unfolds and small pieces start falling into place it is hard not to enjoy every new puzzle thrown into the mix.

Full of revenge, pain and horror this book really grabbed me and didn't let go until the end. Shadows is the car crash you know you shouldn't stop to look at but do so anyway. Twisted threesomes, strange hallucinations and a demonic element come together to build up the suspense right till the very last word. The amount of thought and depth that went into writing this has left me inspired.

Well written, great interesting characters and the surprising paranormal element made this an amazing read. I hope the author will write more about her demons because I really want to read about them.

Can it really be? I have time to do a Sunday Round-up?? *faints*

All hail Autumn! Cold rainy weather but great TV to stay home and snuggle up to! Some of my favourite shows are back and some new ones too! True Blood has lived up to the hype and people are enjoying it. I have had the pleasure of watching the first two episodes and did think they were good. However I think Sookie comes across as a little bit ditzy and slutty. Anyone got something to add to this?

Looking around my favourite blogs I see there isn't much for me to post that hasn't been posted already!

Although yet again my visit to Darque Reviews has left me - Adding more books to my wishlist, thinking 'haha I read that first' and saying 'hate you! I wish I had that book here now!'. Full of the upcoming releases to tempt you. I always love Darque Reviews.

Then over on The Reluctant League of Adults there is a cool contest and some even cooler posts. Also J. F. Lewis has already got the cover for Revamped (which he sent to me) but he isn't allowed to post it yet. I have to say it looks really cool and I can't wait to see what everyone else thinks about it.

The Witchy Chicks always have such interesting post over on their blog but this week the best news over there was that Yasmine Galenorn's Sisters of the Moon series will be released in audiobook format soon!

New author interview and contest coming later on today. I am off to watch Supernatural!!! *drool*

Sunday, 31 August 2008

I got an email today with the subject line 'Gobsmacked' from the lovely Marta Acosta. After reading the email once, twice and then a third time I had to go over to Amazon.de and see for myself. It seems that back in March 2007 I wrote this review for her book 'Happy Hour at Casa Dracula'.

Which left me slightly confused because I only remember winning a copy of 'Happy Hour at Casa Dracula' earlier this year and reviewing it here on my blog.

So I will be changing my review over on Amazon.de (even though I hve't posted over there anymore since starting this blog) but thought you would all be interested.

I can't for the life of me remember reading 'Happy Hour at Casa Dracula' before this year and I don't even remember thinking that it seemed familiar. However it does seem that I have read this book twice and hated it the first time and throughly enjoyed it the second time. I actually went on and ordered the second book in the series as soon as I finished the first because I liked it so much.

I wonder if my tastes changed? If I just wasn't in the mood back in March 2007? Has anyone else ever had this happen? I have to admit I am confused.

Some people posted that they couldn't find any information about a book I reviewed for PNR. So I have had a little look around and found some more information about Reunited by Sally Painter. Here is Sally Painter's website and if you click here you will find all her books for sale including Reunited.

Enjoy!

TFI Friday!!! This week has been the week of tooth ache. A tooth ache so bad that I couldn't even read. Then I got this root canal thing and well now one side of my face looks twice the size of the other. I am hoping that the tooth will now behave its self and I will be able to sleep again.

Anyway that isn't the reason I am posting! First I wanted to say that I have settled on a book prize for this months newsletter giveaway. Storm Born by Richelle Mead was my favourite read so far this month so I want to make sure it travels on to someone else. You can find out more details about the book here and to have a chance at winning the book all you have to do is be a verified subscriber to my newsletter by the 30th of September when I randomly pick a winner.

Oh and I wanted to remind you all about this weeks contest. If you want to win an signed ARC of The Immortals : The crossing then you have until Sunday to enter here!

One last thing....because I am feeling a little better and the tooth ache is nearly gone I thought some of you maybe interested in knowing what guests I have lined up over the coming weeks. Every Sunday there is a new author interview with contest and I can tell you that Caitlin Kittredge, Jackie Kessler, Marta Acosta and Jeanne Stein are all going to be here on Amberkatze's Book Blog from now till the end of September. So keep checking in because there are some cool prizes attached to these interviews!

So it is Monday again and yet again I didn't manage to post a round-up yesterday but I think Sundays are full enough! The new contest and author interview is always on a Sunday so maybe the round-up will keep appearing on a Monday.

On the subject of contests I wanted to remind people who aren't already signed up for my newsletter about the monthly draw! At the end of every month I randomly pick some names from the people signed up and they win a book! Now I still haven't decided how many books and which books I am giving away this month...but I promise to post something soon. However if you aren't already signed up for the newsletter and want to be on the list then sign up using the link in the side bar <----

Also feel free to tell me what you are reading, what you thought of certain books etc by joining me on Goodreads. Ask me, Amberkatze, to be your friend and then you can join the Amberkatze's Book Blog group. Look forward to seeing you over there!

Now I am a little lazy sometimes so I am really glad to go over to sites such as Literary Escapism and Vampire Wire to find out everything I need to know about what is going on lately. If you want to know when Twilight is really coming out and where all the hot contests and author interviews are then I can highly recommend putting both sites on your bookmarks!

My picture this week is yet again Life on Mars. I have finished Carnivale (need to get the 2nd series now) and I have moved on to the second series of this amazing show. If you haven't tried this yet and have the chance..Do it!

Now I haven't come across much else on my online travels that nobody else has posted about so I am going to leave the round up there. However I am going to ask you guys out there a question. I hope I will get some informative answers.

Why Teen/YA books??? Now I love alot of the Teen/YA books and series out there but I am getting a little worried about how many authors are now suddenly joining in. Rachel Vincent announced a while back that she will be doing her own YA series and last month Yasmine Galenorn also gave us the great news. Now I have heard Kim Harrison is joining in and I am sure many more authors are too.

So why?

My Monday Round-up sucked so I thought I would post something else today to make up for it ;)

I just heard from my friend Justin Gustainis (who I interviewed a few months ago) that his sequel to Black Magic Woman is on schedule and should be hitting the shelves in December. So go pre-order your copy of Evil Ways or put it on your wishlist!

He also told me -

Libby is now getting equal billing. Instead of "A Quincey Morris Supernatural Investigation," the cover of EVIL WAYS reads "A Morris and Chastain Investigation."

and

The third Quincey/Libby book will be entitled SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL.

So you heard it hear first...well maybe...

Don't forget to enter the Jocelynn Drake contest which is open until Sunday. Nightwalker has been making waves and it was only released last week!

Jocelynn posted on her blog -

I discovered that I made the USA Today Bestseller list. I came in at #117 at 150. I've been told that it is an extremely hard list to crack since it contains both fiction and nonfiction books. To add to my overwhelming joy, I also discovered that I made the New York Times Fiction Mass Market Bestseller extended list. I came in at #32 out of 35

Oh and usually I don't tell you all what is coming up next week until it is posted (I don't want to jinx myself) but this time Amberkatze's Book Blog is taking part in something big!

Joy Nash's 50 Days, 50 Books Giveaway starts today and Amberkatze's Book Blog is one of the sites giving away a signed copy of Immortals: The Crossing which doesn't come out till the 30th of September!!!

Here is the blurb -

Joy Nash’s Immortals: The Crossing--sixth book in Dorchester’s USA Today Bestselling series Immortals--hits the bookshelves on September 30. But 50 lucky readers will win autographed copies on or before that date!

Yes, that’s right – 50 copies of The Crossing will be given away on 50 participating websites and blogs, which means readers have 50 online chances to win this hot new paranormal romance during the 50 days between August 12 and September 30.

Here is a list of all the participating sites so you can enter 50 times ;)

Other than that I suggest you go over to Yankee Romance Reviews if you weren't the winner of last weeks contest to win a copy of 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover! Linda is over there giving some copies away!

Pop over to Marta Acosta's Vampire Wire for the latest paranormal news and to win My Wicked Enemy by Carolyn Jewel. I haven't read this one yet or even have a copy but my friend Kimberly over on Darque Reviews gave it a thumbs up so it must be good!

Also pop over to Lynda Hilburn's Parnormality Blog to win one of the books I am currently reading! I will let you go over there yourself to find out which one ;)

Oh and I am reading...it is just so hot here right now and I am back at work. Expect some reviews soon!

The Sunday round-up is a little late this week! Yesterday I was a little busy so this week we are having a very short Monday Round-Up because it looks like I either missed everything interesting or people are just on holiday!

The picture this week is 'Carnivale' a series I added to my wishlist a while ago and finally got for my Birthday. I am half way through the box set and I am enjoying this weird and spooky series.

So some fun first! Want to know if you would survive a zombie attack? Take the very informative test here.

Go check out the links in the sidebar of the blogs I check in on. There is always great news over on Literary Escapism and Vampire Wire. The Reluctant League of Adults, something Wicked, Witchy Chicks and Fangs, Fur and Fey cover the majority of the greatest paranormal writers out there. Oh and to finish off check out Darque Reviews for reviews of all those upcoming releases you want to have now but they aren't out yet.

Don't forget to join me on Goodreads, Facebook or Myspace. I am always under the name Amberkatze and if you want to know what is new here as soon as it is new then sign up for the Newsletter (see the sidebar for all the links you need!)

Thanks to everyone who already entered the latest contest! Keep those entries coming...the more the merrier! Oh and I am enjoying reading all the comments...I think New Zealand is getting alot of attention!

OK...back to reading...

As some of you already know I will be hitting the big 30 in a couple of days. So I am off to Prague to get slightly drunk and drown my sorrows! So things will be a little quiet over here on Amberkatze's Book Blog until Sunday.

If I have a chance to get online I will post something. Otherwise expect me back for the Sunday Round-up, contest winner announcements and the next interview/contest.

Don't forget about the Jenna Black interview and contest! Tell your friends and any other people who may have an interest!

Also don't forget the first monthly giveaway!

Thanks to everyone who is out there supporting me! Have a nice few days peace and quiet without me around ;)

This week I am really over-joyed to have author Jenna Black on Amberkatze's Book Blog! Jenna is one of the authors I have been following since I got addicted to the Paranormal genre and I love her books. The Guardians in the Night series gave me a great dose of vampires but her new Morgan Kingsley Exorcist series really took my breathe away and the next installment The Devil You Know is due out this week!

If you haven't tried any of her books yet then you really need to read the interview and check out her site where you can read the first chapters of all her books!

So on with the interview! And keep reading till the end because there is a contest too!!

---------------------------------

Amber - So before I start asking the real questions maybe you can start off things by telling us all a little about your new book 'The Devil You Know'.

Jenna - My main character, Morgan Kingsley, is an exorcist who is possessed by Lugh, the king of the demons. Usually, when a person is possessed, the demon ends up in total control of the body, but that's not the case with Morgan and Lugh. For mysterious reasons, Morgan retains control, even though she's possessed. In The Devil You Know, Morgan and Lugh search for answers as to why she's so unusual, and Morgan discovers that much of what she knows about herself and her family is a lie.

Amber - 'The Devil You Know' is the second book in the Morgan Kingsley series and I know The Devil's Due is coming out in a few months. How many more books are there going to be in this series?

Jenna - There will be at least five books in this series.

Amber - You also write another paranormal series called 'Guardians of the Night'. Can you tell us a little about that series?

Jenna - The Guardians of the Night series are paranormal romances, set in a world where there are two kinds of vampires: Killers and Guardians. Killers, as you might have guessed by their name, feed by drinking human blood and killing their victims. Once they begin to kill, they become addicted to it and are unable to stop. Guardians are vampires who feed on animal blood. They are less powerful, both physically and psychically, than the Killers, but it is their mission to protect the human population from Killers. Their mission is complicated by the constant temptation to reach for greater power by making a kill.

Amber - What does the future hold for 'Guardians of the Night' series? Hungers of the Heart was the 4th book but is it the last?

Jenna - The future for the series is still unclear. There may or may not be more of them--though if there are more, there will still be a significant break between releases.

Amber - 'The Guardians of the Night' series and 'Morgan Kingsley' books are both paranormal but still worlds apart from each other. How did you come up with the ideas for the books?

Jenna - The Guardians of the Night came about when I read and was frustrated by a "reunion romance"--meaning the kind of romance where the hero and heroine were an item in the past, but for some reason broke up. In this book, the hero had left the heroine without a word, and she never knew what had happened to him until he popped back up into her life. I was unsatisfied with the reasons why he left in the first place--and especially for why he didn't tell her he was leaving--and I'd felt that way about many reunion romances I'd read before. I found myself thinking "I'll never write a reunion romance." Then I asked myself what explanation the hero could have had for his disappearance that would have convinced me it was okay for him to disappear without a word. I decided that if he were turned into a vampire, he'd never be able to explain it, so he could justifiably disappear. And that led to an entire world and an entire series.

The Morgan Kingsley series was inspired by books I was reading, too, though in a totally different way. I got totally hooked on the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, and I noticed that for some reason, I wasn’t burning out on that series as I had on every other series I could remember reading in the past. (Generally, after a series hit five or six books, I’d find myself getting tired of it.) I tried to analyze what it was about the Anita Blake series that made it still hold my interest after so many books, and I decided it was the enormity and the intensity of Anita’s internal conflicts. The scale of those conflicts was so large that they couldn't be satisfactorily solved in just a few books, so I was still driven to keep reading.

When I set about to come up with my own urban fantasy concept, I started with the desire to build a really strong internal conflict to sustain the series. And that’s how I ended up with a possessed exorcist.

Amber - Are you like any of your characters? Do you base any of them on people you know?

Jenna - There are parts of me in all of my characters, but I don't have a character I would say I'm like. I also don't base characters on people I know, although I'm sure the people I've known through my life have heavily influenced me. It's just not a conscious influence.

Amber - What kind of atmosphere do you need to get your writing done? Lots of coffee and a quiet room? Or loud music and food?

Jenna - There is no particular atmosphere I need. I've written in lots of different situations. Generally, I'll write in a quiet room, though I will sometimes play music. But I've also managed to write in airports and at conventions and in all sorts of other places. It all depends on how motivated I am, which often depends on how tight my deadline is!

Amber - Do you have any other projects coming up or are you sticking to the Guardians and Kingsley for now?

Jenna - My agent is shopping a proposal for a young adult urban fantasy that I'd really like to write. I've been reading a lot of young adult UF these days, and I'm a big fan. (Actually, I'm pretty much a big fan of any kind of urban fantasy!) I don't know yet whether that idea will take off, but I hope so!

Amber - What kind of research, if any, do you do for your books?

Jenna - As little as possible. I hate research. I don’t have the patience for it, because writers always have these totally off-the-wall questions. Usually, when I have something I need to research, it’s not something I can just quickly look up. One example I’ve used when whining, er, that is, writing, about research is when Morgan, the heroine in my urban fantasy novel, had to use a Taser. Because the scene didn’t end after she fired the Taser, I had to figure out just what you do with the darn thing after you’ve fired it—whether there’s something you have to eject, whether you have to roll the wires back up and stuff them into something, that kind of thing. I looked all over the Internet and found tons of information about firing a Taser—but nothing about what happens afterward. It was one or two lines of my novel, but I didn’t dare get it wrong. And not being a research junkie, I really would have rather spent that time writing.

Whenever I can possibly get away with it, I’ll make things up rather than do research. Obviously, it’s not always possible (see above), and I do the research when I need to. It’s just not something I enjoy doing, or feel that I’m very good at doing.

Amber - You have some pretty hot scenes in your books. How easy or hard is it to write them?

Jenna - It's gotten easier over time. The first time I had to write a really hot scene, I was so inhibited about it that I kept popping up out of my chair and walking around instead of writing. I've gotten to the point where I write them with relative ease now, though I still struggle with some of the kinkier elements (and those of you who've read The Devil Inside know what elements I'm talking about). But I think pushing myself to write things that make me uncomfortable has made me a better writer. I seem to do my best work when I'm uncomfortable. Lucky me!

Amber - Would you ever like to see your books made into a TV series or film? Any particular actors/actresses you would like to see playing your characters?

Jenna - I actually don't think I'd want to see my books made into TV or film. The idea has a kind of visceral appeal--but then I think about what it's like to see the film or TV version of a book I've really enjoyed. Almost every time, the film or TV doesn't do the book justice and I'm disappointed. I think that disappointment would be even stronger as the writer of the book than it would be for a reader.

Amber - What authors do you like to read when you have time to read!?

Jenna - I like to read practically all urban fantasy authors. I particularly love Kelley Armstrong, Rachel Caine, and Patricia Briggs, just to name three. A couple of days ago, I read THE HOST, by Stephenie Meyer, and was blown away by it. I've really enjoyed her YA series, but this one is in a different league, in my opinion. Maybe it just pushed all my buttons, but it's a huge book, and I sat there and read it in one long sitting.

Amber - What are you listening to at the moment? Any great bands you want to share with us?

My music tastes are pretty eclectic--and eccentric at times. Lately, I've "discovered" country music. I'm not a fan of the more traditional country music, but I like some of the songs that are more on the borderline of pop or rock. I particularly enjoy Big & Rich (of Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy fame). Some of their lyrics make me laugh out loud, and they've got some great harmony. Because I love harmony, my absolute favorites are a cappella bands, such as Rockapella, baSix, and Ball in the House.

A huge thank you to Jenna for taking the time to answer my questions! I hope Jenna will come back again sometime in the future!

-----------------------------------

The contest

This week sees the release of The Devil You Know and I had my copy on pre-order months ago. However some of you out there may not have even read the first book in the series. Maybe some of you haven't even read any of 'The Guardians of the Night' series!

So this weeks prize is your choice of Jenna Black book!

Two lucky people will get to choose one of Jenna's already released books (which includes The Devil You Know because when the winners are picked it will be out already) and I will have the book sent to them.

How to enter -

To enter this contest please post a comment on this thread telling me what paranormal type you prefer and why? Demons? Vamps? Faeries? etc

You can also sign up for the newsletter for an extra entry and if you post about this contest somewhere on the web (and leave the link in your comment) I will also give you a third entry.

The contest will close on Sunday the 3rd of August at 4pm CET. If you win you must be willing to give me a valid email address so I can contact you for your choice of book and mailing address. Another Sunday is upon us and I am still in a good mood because I am still off work!!! My picture this week is the 'Queen of Hearts' by Rachel Anderson. She is one of my favourite artists and I am actually cross stitching this picture to put up on my wall. It will take me about 20 years to get done though so maybe someone can send me a poster of this lovely Queen? ;)

Over on Something Wicked this week author Shirley Damsgaard asks - Which author would you most like to meet? I myself would be happy to meet just about any of the authors I read but being stuck in Europe that doesn't look like it is going to happen anytime soon. So a big thank you to all the authors who have, are and will support me by emailing me back, letting me interview them, giving up stuff for contests, sending me cool things and of course for the books!

Oh and I just opened Darque Reviews and said my usual 'Damn'! More reviews of books I want!! How does she do it? Well she did tell me...but again being in Europe sucks ;) Anyway if you like Caitlin Kittredge there is a great interview over there so go and check it out!

There is an interview with Rachel Caine over on Sidhe's site this week. I wonder if Rachel will ever send me back those interview questions I sent her a few months back...

My friend over at Literary Escapism has loads of cool reviews and news this week! Go over and have a look if you are interested in the paranormal genre!

Another site worth checking out is Urban Fantasy Land. It went a bit quiet over there for a while but things have started picking up again.

Suburban Vampire has two new polls this week. They both involve vampires and movies...I won't tell you more...you should go look!

The hype just keeps coming for True Blood. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months you will have seen advertisements for this everywhere. I saw a leaked copy of the first episode weeks ago and I have to say it left me with mixed feelings. On the one side it was Sookie but on the other side a lot of it was not Charlaine Harris. Anyway HBO have graphic novel online to lead us up to the start of the series. Go and have a free read and check out more about the series.

So enough from me! Don't forget to enter the monthly draw and come back in a few hours for the new author interview and contest!

I think that everyone knows that Sherrilyn Kenyon's Acheron book is coming out soon. If you don't know about it then you are lucky enough not to be signed up for any newsletters or MySpace pages for this book and the author. All I can say is the book better be bloody good after all the hype the publishers are making about it.

Anyway I was approached by 'the people' asking if I wanted a preview of the trailer (I would have liked a review copy but beggars can't be choosers). I said yes but I am sure you have already seen it because I was asleep (stupid time difference) when I got the email with the details. Here it is though....tell me what you think.

Acheron Trailer

(I settled for posting the link because the trailer just keeps playing and playing and makes the site a little slow)

Oh and tell me what you think about book trailers in general...I mean why?? I have the blurb, the cover and the author posting blogs, interviews etc so why oh why do I need a trailer? In some instances it actually ruins my 'view' of the characters etc.

It has been a great month here on Amberkatze's Book Blog and it isn't over yet!! I hit 200 books read over the weekend and the site has now had over 10,000 hits!!! There are an amazing amount of subscriptions to the newsletter and so I want to give something back!

Each month I will randomly pick someone from my newsletter subscribers and they will win a prize! The prize will always be announced before hand so you can all drool over it and the prize will most likely be a book! I hope that is ok with everyone ;)

Because this is the first month I am running this and because my Birthday is at the end of the month. I will be giving away 3 books to start us off! That means there will be 3 winners!!!

Here are the books I am giving away!

First we have 'Dante's Girl' by Natasha Rhodes. I interviewed Natasha a few weeks ago and her publisher sent me this copy to give away! So what better time to give it away than now!

Next up is 'Night Shift' by Lilith Saintcrow. This is the newest release from this amazing author and it is the first in a new series as well. You can see my review here.

And last up is another new release and this time something a little bit more on the fun side. Deja Demon by Julie Kenner is the fourth book in the series and if you like something a little lighter than the other 2 books on offer this one is for you. You can read my review here.

How to enter and the rules -

To enter you have to be signed up to my newsletter. Your subscription must be verified otherwise you will not be entered.

On the 31st of July...no scrap that as I am going to be getting very drunk that day....on the 3rd of August (back from getting drunk then) I will pick the winners using RaffleKing. I will contact the three winners via the emails they signed up for the newsletter
with.

The winners then have a week to reply to me saying which book they prefer, what their second choice would be and then their 3rd choice.

First come first served!

If one of the winners doesn't reply in time a new winner will be picked.

All of my books are registered on Bookcrossing.com. This means they have a number written inside them. You do not have to be a member of Bookcrossing to enter and I do not expect the winners to join Bookcrossing or journal the book.

So sign up for the newsletter to win!

Oh and don't forget to enter the Angie Fox ARC contest!!
