The Blurb -

Return to Lawson’s world of Witch Ember with a new tale of darkness, intrigue, and violence. A tale of Sorrow.

A new killer stalks the palaces of the EroBernd Empire, striking down prominent members of the gentry and clergy, seemingly at will. No amount of security is an impediment, no number of bodyguards a deterrent. This killer enters unseen and departs untouched, leaving behind scenes of butchery and blood. Duke Valven of EroBernd decides to send his chief assassin, Count Hashii, to the boutique province of Vestiga to resolve the matter before it can cause any further embarrassment. Locals have already contrived a name for this assassin, based on descriptions from victims who lived long enough to tell the tale: a wraith of shadow–a countenance of immeasurable remorse–and eyes that wept black tears.

It is a contest of assassins. One discreet and renowned, an artist tempered by years of service–the other a savage neophyte, ephemeral and unstoppable–both ruthless and deadly. Can the infamous Lord Ash stop the bloodshed and discover the identity of the assassin known as Sorrow?

My Review -

After Witch Ember and The Raven comes Sorrow with its amazing cover. Set in the same land as the previous books the only difference to this story is its size. Over 200 pages of magical darkness awaits any readers of this new installment and even though it is smaller it still packs a punch.

The tale takes place in the land that John Lawson has created and has really brought to life in each of his books. With such detail and linguistic depth you really begin to feel like you are in another world. Fantasy is the main genre here but mystery is woven into this well written story.

Another lovely addition to the Witch Ember Tales and hopefully not the last.

Ariya is a fairy suffering from mysterious dreams about a dangerous but gorgeous man. Waking up from one of these dreams she finds her family under attack and she goes over to the mortal realm hoping for safety. On the run in a strange place she lands in more danger but is saved by the man from her dreams.

Jace Archane is a vampire who is known for killing the women he feeds from. Ariya is a problem he doesn't want to deal with but when the danger she is running from also seems to be threatening his world he knows they must work together. However from the first moment it is clear to see that the vampire and fairy have feelings for each other. Can they unite and fight against their common enemy? Can a fairy and a vampire really come together?

This is the first book in the Ashen Twilight series and it makes a good first impression. The reader is thrown into the history of the story straight away and then pulled back to the present and into a place where vampires, werewolves and other paranormal creatures are at work. With two strong lead characters, a nice plot and a good writing style this could turn into a fascinating series.

Although the author isn't new to the writing world this seems to be the first step she has made into the paranormal. I did enjoy this read but I have to admit that it was a little too romantic and history based for my liking. However on saying that the story did have a great Scottish tint to it and I really liked the over all concept.

Rae Lori is my guest tomorrow on Amberkatze's Book Blog so I am looking forward to getting to know her better!

What Legends are Made of is a collection of four short stories all written by author Heather Beck. The blurb for the book promises a collection of stories filled with suspense, terror and romance. All the stories are set in a normal world but each time something strange and unbelievable happens. With twists and turns in each tale these stories are supposed to be unforgettable and leave you spellbound. Each story has its merits but does the book really hold what it promises?

The first story in this anthology is called Sir Tristan's Estate and was my favourite of the collection. The story starts off by introducing the reader to Skye Huntington. A photographer on a new assignment she is shocked to find out that the estate she is supposed to be taking photos of is actually closed. Sir Tristan was the owner of the huge estate that produced cotton by using slave workers. He finally set them free and died a lonely man with no heirs. Now the estate that was turned into a B & B has been claimed by a confirmed heir.

Skye meets Tom when she arrives at the estate and he takes good care of her. At first she thinks he is a nice guy but then she starts seeing things and then Tom starts to show his true colours. Skye finds herself going from one scary situation to the next in this great short story. Quite spooky and very interesting this did have some suspense, terror and romance. A nice start to the collection of stories.

Following the stay at the estate the story Blue Water takes the reader on a trip to Hawaii. This time the story is about Mandy and her best friends brother Ed. When they finally get to spend some time together he asks her on a date that has them meeting more than just sharks in the depths of the ocean.

A nice story but not exactly full of suspense or terror in my eyes. Definitely romantic in its own way and certainly an interesting tale this had shaky start but a good plot. I think this story would have had more power if it had been longer. It showed alot of promise, could have been built on but was too short.

Freaky Frank is the title of the third story in this anthology. Brittany Adams is turning to the carnival for her summer job this year and it isn't really what she wanted. Meeting Frank gives her some hope but he turns out be very freaky.

A nice fairy like tale with a unicorn, spelling fish and a talking tree. I felt Brittany was a bit naive at the beginning but was glad to see her make a grown up and responsible decision at the end of the story. Not really suspense filled but a nice helping of romance. This was well written and well thought out. A story that leaves you wondering what happened next.

This fourth and last story in this collection is called One Stop Horror Shop. Karyn and Max Shield's relationship took off because they both wanted to own a magic shop. Now that they are older and married they have the chance to buy one. However when everything is signed and sealed the previous owned falls ill.

Brother and sister act, Jodie and Mitchell, are the first customers to buy anything in the new magic shop and want to use their new purchases to start a magician show. Their first gig doesn't exactly go how they expected and when they go back to the magic shop to complain the horror begins making this not a bad story. This was a little unbelievable but certainly like nothing you will have read before. A nice ending to an unusual collection of stories.

All in all this book was made up of unique and interesting stories. Not exactly as suspense and terror filled as I expected but as the majority of the characters were in their twenties I think this would be a perfect for young readers. The author obviously has a talent for coming up with something new and different and I am interested in seeing what else she has on offer. Give this a try if you want to read something different and spooky.

Meet Frankie Lane -- trapped in her Persian cat form, homeless, lost, stuck in a Dumpster in the back of a Chinese restaurant just before Christmas. Sucks to be her. Enter Glynice the savior and all 'round pushy broad -- secretary to workaholic Sam Carsters, who spends more time devoted to his law practice than enjoying life. Determined to give Sam a reason to come home at night, Glynice rescues Frankie and deposits her on Sam's desk at his house as an early Christmas gift. In a cage. With a big red bow around her neck.

Meet Sam Carsters -- criminal defense attorney, and proud new owner of his very own cat who's half human, rockin' hot and can't seem to hang onto her human form unless she's engaged in a little thing called mating fever. And engage they do...

I enjoyed this festive story and I really liked the cat theme. There should be more were-cat stories!! Dakota is a great writer and I can't wait to snuggle up with another of her stories.

Blurb -

It’s April 1964 in the weeks preceding Easter. A brick wall unearthed at the excavation site of a new restaurant collapses. Riding a wave of raw sewage that empties into the site are the bones of many human skeletons. Records show a storm sewer behind the wall was backfilled in the 1920s, but the records are wrong. Something is amiss in the small German Catholic town of Three Bridges, PA.

Orphaned at birth and a one-time felon who earned his nickname “from the sound a crowbar makes when it hits a man’s head,” Johannes “Wump” Hozer is the parish’s custodian. Wump is old now, and tired. Childhood memories and strange presentments begin to plague him, one in particular: a drowning infant whose rescue netted him a blanket of bones and an eerie pleading from the newborn “as if it was me who wouldn’t let it go to heaven.”

Where did the bones come from? What could be more horrific than a town’s sewer system filled with human bones? Wump is afraid he’s about to find out.

This story about a sleepy town with its fair share of secrets was quite impressive. At first I enjoyed the setting and build up into the murder and mystery genre this book seemed to be falling into. Then it started to take a totally religious turn but then at the end the more paranormal angle burst in giving the book a very unforgettable finish.

With each chapter giving you a reason to keep reading this novel really grabs and doesn't let go. The author has taken an interesting topic and made it into a great work of fiction. With the style of John Grisham and Dan Brown and the religious twist this is quite unique and worth casting an eye over.

This was a short but inspiring story about a witch and werewolf finding true love in record time. This would have made a great full length novel and I will be looking out for more books by this author in the future.

More of a cozy mystery than a paranormal one but still interesting enough to keep me reading to the end. Nice main character, a good plot and some humour made this a nice quick read. This series shows promise and I wouldn't mind seeing where things go.

My full review will be on Paranormal Romance when it is posted.

The first book in this series Underdead is already available.

Rhia has been bound to the Spirit of Crow and for the last 20 years she has been helping the dead cross over. With the continuing war plaguing Rhia's people their only hope of peace is the Spirit of Raven to come and and The Reawakened. So far Raven has not shown itself and the Descendants are not only just killing Rhia's people but also preventing them from using the magic they possess. Keeping her family, friends and people safe is just as important to Rhia now as it always was but this time there is more to lose. Will Rhia be strong enough to get through everything life is about to throw at her?

Sura and Dravek are spirit brother and sister and they both know that the heat they feel when they are together is something special. A romantic relationship is out of the question and they both have to go their own way even if it hurts to do so. Although they end up being too close for comfort and making bad decisions as well. Things could get deadly for both of them if they don't control themselves and their powers. Will they manage to find a way of being together without hurting everyone they care about?

The Reawakened had twists and turns that kept me guessing till the end. I always thought I knew what was coming but the author kept surprising me all the way. The characters and story are just captivating and just like the previous two books I found it hard to put this down. When I did have to put The Reawakened away my heart ached for the moment to come when I could pick it back up again. The world is magical, mystical and fantastic but also so realistic. I loved this original idea and only wish it wasn't over.

Being the third and last book in the Aspect of the Crow Trilogy I did have a few tears in my eye when I got to the end of The Reawakened (I was on the bus so I managed to contain myself!). Everything came together and it was the perfect ending to what has been the best reading experience I have had this year. I can only continue to praise this trilogy and recommend it to anyone who will listen to me! Even if like myself you aren't usually into fantasy and romance I would highly suggest giving the first book in this trilogy a try. If you have been following this series you will not be disappointed and I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

Aspect of Crow Trilogy has really blown me away. I feel like any other book I read now will never make up for this experience. I am going to treasure all three books and I will definitely be reading them again and again.

This short story about a woman summoning two demons to help her get rid of her ex-husband is fun and frisky. Unfortunately one thing ruined it. It was too short. I would love to see something longer in the same style please!! Maybe a little hotter too...although it was hot enough.

Gargoyles definitely don't get enough attention in the paranormal genre and I am happy to see that another writer has taken them under her wing. C.E. Murphy's Negotiator series introduced me to these magical creatures and I hope that she and this author will get more writers moving away from the everyday vamps, werewolves and fairies to the more exotic creatures like the hunky and sexy gargoyles in this book.

Me and My Ghoulfriends is a ghostbusting chick-lit romance was a great read and I hope there will be more. Maybe this will be a series? If you like Terri Garey or Shanna Swendson this is something you should try. Not to heavy but fun and flirty.

This mystery thriller was definitely no romance but it was totally erotic. Dark, bloody and savage the main story in this story is one of murder in the wrong part of town. On the side this story is full of sexual encounters that are not for beginners but for the hardcore lovers of the erotic genre.

The two stories in Going Up, Going Down are great examples of great erotic and romantic stories. While the first story by Celia Kyle is hot and gripping the second story by Renae Johnson is different, sexy and loving.

So if you want something hot to read but not entirely paranormal have a quick read of this one!

It is time to plan the wedding and Milagro De Los Santos is having some problems. You see her husband to be, Oswald Grant M.D. is gorgeous and loves her but his parents hate her. Milagaro is already an unofficial part of the family due to the genetic anomaly that she shares with them which causes them crave Blood. So not only does Milagro have a normal wedding to organise but also one for the Vampire Council who want her to make things more official when she marries Oswald.

Luckily or unluckily (she isn't sure yet), Milagro's best friend hijacks the role of wedding coordinator and takes over. Milagro also has no choice about the Vampire Council's aide to guide her and Oswald through the ancient vampire marriage rituals. She therefore finds herself face to face with Oswald's ex Cornelia who is also sister to the attractive Ian who keeps showing up whenever Oswald isn't around.

Things start going wrong and everything is getting in the way of the wedding plans and people start to think that Milagro is cracking up under the pressure. Is she just paranoid after her recent experiences or is there really some hidden enemy trying to make sure Milagro doesn't marry Oswald? Maybe it could just be a case of pre-wedding jitters?

The Bride of Casa Dracula was an absolutely wonderful read and I hope there is more to come. I enjoyed the first two books in the series (Happy Hour at Casa Dracula and Midnight Brunch at Casa Dracula) but this third book was the best by far. I have finally grown close enough to Milagro and enjoyed this adventure more than her previous ones. This time around I understood her, I laughed with her and I cried with her.

The plot in this book was at times complex but it was simple to follow thanks to the authors marvellous writing style. The mystery in the story and new characters in this newest release will have readers on the edge of their seats with anticipation right till the end. Meanwhile the sexy, romantic and hilarious aspects all fans have come to enjoy and love are just as prominent as before. However be careful for the ending which is very unexpected and could cause a few tears.

In this anthology everything goes and it always involves three people. This is more than hot and you will need a break after every story to get your breath back. A few of the stories are paranormal but most are not. So if you need to get all hot and bothered this is the one for you.
