Elizabeth Phoenix has some unique skills but while she knows a little about how to use them she prefers to keep them a secret. Then Liz finds Ruthie, her foster mother, dying after a brutal attack and before Liz knows what has hit her she is waking up from a coma in hospital with the police waiting to hear her side of the story. Of course she can't tell them about Ruthie's last words, a cryptic message, and she definitely can't tell them where their number one suspect is.

The number one suspect is no other than Liz's first love Jimmy. What Liz doesn't know about Jimmy is that he is a dhampir and that Ruthie was a Seer. Now Ruthie's powers have been passed onto the Liz she finds herself asking alot of questions. Problem is she isn't getting enough answers. With her senses heightened and Ruthie helping her, Liz can only keep going and keep learning as fast as she can so that she will manage to stop doomsday from coming. Things have already been set in motion and Liz will have to go through alot before finding the real powers she has and needs to help save the world.

Any Given Doomsday is the first book in the Phoenix Chronicles, a new series written by Lori Handeland. I thought Handeland's Nightcreature series was amazing but I have to say that the author has out done herself with this new book. If the series keeps on par with this first book then this is going to be one of my favourite series to follow!

Liz is an amazing character that I could connect with from the very beginning and the other characters she is joined by were so interesting and realistic that I can't wait to meet them again. I loved the story which spoils the reader with lots of paranormal creatures and teases you with the promise of more to come. This is fast, furious and fascinating with a good balance of action, thrills, sex and mystery.

This is a gripping read that I couldn't put down. If you haven't read any of Lori's work before then you are in for a real treat. Rachel Caine, Rachel Vincent, Kelley Armstrong and many more Paranormal Urban Fantasy authors should be worried about this series or wish they wrote it first ;)

Oh and I can't wait for Doomsday Can Wait the second part in this series!
